Carmel High is a school of 800 students with over 50 faculty members, situated just outside of the city limits of Carmel, California. Built in 1940, CHS is known for its lovely view of the Santa Lucia Mountains with a peek of Point Lobos and the Pacific Ocean.
The school has been extensively refurbished, largely due to the passage of two school bonds that provided upgrades to all schools within the Carmel Unified School District. The most recent bond, passed in 2005, funded the building of the new Center for the Performing Arts and swimming pool, upgraded athletic facilities and added permanent classrooms to replace portables.
CHS has been a top performing public high school in Monterey County for many years. The API (Academic Performance Index) from the last school year is 855. Over 95% of our students continue on to both junior college or four year colleges and universities.
Carmel High offers a wide variety of Advanced Placement courses ranging from AP Calculus (two years – AB and BC) and Statistics to AP Biology and Chemistry. Additional AP courses are offered in History/Social Science, English, Foreign Language and Computer Science.
CHS is also known for its Instrumental and Choral Music programs where students have achieved state and national recognition. Several music students have received scholarships to such schools as the Berkelee School of Music in Boston, California Academy of the Arts and the University of Southern California. Significant numbers of CHS music students are selected yearly to participate in California Honor choirs and bands.
We offer an outstanding range of electives, including popular classes in Dance, Photography, Graphic Design, Video Production, Industrial Arts, and Fine Art. Our Drama department puts on several plays every year. Our ROP vocational courses offer a wide range of career development opportunities in Sports Medicine, Digital Music, Hospitality, and more.
In addition to academics and the arts, Carmel High offers over 25 competitive interscholastic teams for boys and girls to compete athletically. CHS is known for exceptional results in Football, Baseball, Track and Field, Cross Country, Swimming and Diving, and Girl's Softball, boys and girls soccer, to name a few. Offerings include Girl's Field Hockey, Lacrosse,Wrestling and all of the major sports typically seen in high school.
Carmel High also boasts numerous academic teams from Robotics and Mathletics to Mock Trial and Model UN. Model UN and Mathletics have been recognized for excellence at numerous competitions, and several students have won individual awards. The Robotics team has placed highly at several regional tournaments and qualified for nationals on two separate occasions. They also received the Governor’s award in 2016. The Mock Trial team has won numerous Monterey County championships and won the World and California State championships during the 2016-17 school year.
